America's Voice

America’s Voice has been buttressing pro-immigration reform since its inception in 2008. From a finger-on-the-pulse approach to immigration stories around the country to workers’ rights advocacy and the promotion of undocumented immigrants’ rights, America’s Voice has a multi-faceted approach to bettering the opportunities and resources for immigrants in America. With a further focus on guaranteed and fully enforced rights for immigrants, the core values of America’s Voice speak to the plight of the 11 million Americans-in-waiting that are seeking documentation.

America’s Voice has been a vocal proponent of the DREAM Act, proposed multi-phase legislation that would first grant conditional residency and then permanent residency for those illegally brought into the US as minors. During the Trump administration, America’s Voice has provided forceful opposition to the government’s policies on refugees, the border wall with Mexico and the treatment of undocumented immigrant families.

America’s Voice has also taken keen interest in raising awareness and support for individually cases, with petitions and public advocacy for asylum seekers and undocumented immigrants in California, Arizona, Georgia and several other states.

Founded by Frank Sharry, the former executive director of the National Immigration Forum Centro Presente for Central American refugees in Boston, America’s Voice has offered a national platform for immigration issues, highlighting the personal stories and the broad legislative activity. With Trump’s contentious policies of travel bans and the border wall, America’s Voice continues to find itself at the focal point of a divisive political topic.

Brennan Center for Justice

A non-partisan law and policy institute based out of NYU, the Brennan Center for Justice works to reform, revitalize and defend the US system of democracy and justice. With a specific focus on voting rights, campaign finance reform and ending mass incarceration, the Center has a multi-pronged approach to fostering democratic participation.

Part think tank and part advocacy group, the Brennan Center offers rigorous research in order to hold institutions accountable and provides innovative policy solutions in order to promote their objectives. These include their signature policy initiative, automatic voter registration, which is in place in Washington DC and 10 states, as well as the Reverse Mass Incarceration Act which seeks to reward states that reduce prison populations without an increase in crime. In addition, the Brennan Center has proposed a small donor public finance system to elevate the importance of the regular citizen in contributing to political campaigns.

These approaches have been met with varying levels of opposition, but the Brennan Center for Justice has certainly been successful in holding institutions and local government accountable in attempt to influence and distort the rule of law as it relates to democracy and justice. In the context of the Trump administration, their work on liberty and national security and voting rights has particularly come under scrutiny.

The Center for Migration Studies of New York (CMS)

A long-standing stalwart in the immigration policy community, The Centre for Migration Studies (CMS) offers extensive analysis on immigration issues. With a five-fold mission that involves research, sponsorship, journal publication, faith-based institutional support and historical record, CMS offers a broad, non-governmental resource to scrutinize immigration policy.

CMS has long styled itself as a non-partisan think tank, with consultative status at the UN and with policy makers on regional, national and local levels. Nevertheless, with the strict anti-immigration policies of the Trump administration, CMS has invariably found themselves on the opposing aisle. While their publications and sponsorships are grounded in facilitating an even-handed discussion about pressing immigration issues, CMS have voiced a visceral distaste for Trump’s policy on DACA and the approach to undocumented families.

CMS continues to provide extensive informational materials, from the International Migration Review to the Journal on Migration and Human Security as well as a collection of essays, lectures and books that continue to outline policy. In addition, events range from addressing the global impact of the refugee crisis to symposiums on localized and state issues. You can find more information about their events here.

With a board of trustees including Bishop of Brooklyn Nicholas DiMarzio and Reverend Moacir Balen, the faith-based roots of CMS certainly inform and shape the perspective and manner in which CMS approach their work.

Everytown for Gun Safety

Formed in 2014 as a merge between Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action, Everytown for Gun Safety has become a focal point for gun control advocacy. Combining the political strength of the 855 mayors signed up to the former organization and the grass root network of the latter, Everytown for Gun Safety has achieved a cross-sectional movement that has lobbied different levels of government for stricter gun laws since its conception.

With a multi-faceted approach to gun violence through background checks, domestic violence, preventable death and gun trafficking, Everytown for Gun Safety has sought to tackle gun violence from various angles. In 2017 alone, Everytown for Gun Safety successfully supported legislation upholding Florida’s open-carry ban, lobbied the Rhode Island governor to sign a bill keeping guns out of the hands of domestic abusers and pressured Facebook into tightening its rules on unlicensed gun sales on its platforms.

Everytown for Gun Safety has engaged in a longstanding opposition with the National Rifle Association (NRA). Moreover, Everytown for Gun Safety has caused also cause controversy in the past, with accusations of inflating the number of shootings per diem in the US.

Nevertheless, with an advisory board including former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo and philanthropist Warren Buffett, Everytown for Gun Safety has maintained an established network of support and continues to act as a leading voice in the struggle for gun reform and the reduction of gun violence.

US-China Business Council

The pre-eminent advocate for constructive and results-oriented engagement between the US and China, the US-China Business Council (USCBC) was founded in 1973 on the back of Richard Nixon’s presidential visit to China. In the last 45 years, the USCBC has sought to eliminate trade and investment barriers between China and the US and cultivate a mutually beneficial partnership for US and Chinese business.

USCBC have summarised their top priorities as continuing to solidify the foundation for mutually beneficial commerce, reducing trade barriers and protectionism, ensuring competitive neutrality and strengthening the adherence to mutually beneficial innovation.

USCBC put out frequent briefs scrutinizing the mutual investments between China and the US and establish entrepreneurial and governmental events to foster engagement between players in both countries.

The growing tension and focus on trade barriers and tariffs between the two countries has seen USCBC take on a notably more substantial role. With key Trump administration policies running the risk of escalating a trade war, USCBC has found itself playing arbiter in attempting to placate the two countries. With other major policy areas such as North Korea and Russia having implications on the current trade relations between the US and China, USCBC find itself as one of the foremost voices in a particularly contentious area of trade policy.

Women Cross DMZ

Women Cross DMZ is a diverse and driven collection of female peacemakers striving for resolve on the Korean peninsula. It is the foremost cross-field, cross-national organization, intent on bring an end to the conflict that has marred North and South Korea for the better part of the last century.

Founded by the indomitable Christine Ahn, the co-founder of the Korea Policy Institute and the Korea Peace network, Women Cross DMZ has demonstrated a tireless resolve to end a conflict that has shaped one of the most notorious civil standoffs in modern history. From detailed coverage of diplomatic and political activity to marches and policy advocacy, Women Cross DMZ has centered its message on expanding and deepening the involvement of women in the pursuit of peace and to reunite families long separated by Korea’s division.

Perhaps no event encapsulates the solidarity of its mission more than the march in 2015 that conceived the organization’s place as a broker in the struggle for peace. On May 24th, International Women’s Day for Peace and Disarmament, a collection of thirty international women peacemakers successfully crossed the 2-mile stretch of the DMZ separating the two countries. Ever since, their historic walk has served as a marker for fostering further links between the two countries.

There has been some criticism at their perceived willingness to overlook some of the egregious flaws and human rights abuses carried out by the North, but with a steadfast organization of female activists from a wide range of backgrounds and political struggles, the movement has largely been praised for helping to navigate a path towards peace.

With delegates including Gloria Steinem, 2011 Liberian Nobel Peace Laureate Leymah Gbowee and Mexican-American human rights Lawyer Erika Guevara Rosas, the diversity of Women Cross DMZ’s representation is vast and all-encompassing. This is not a niche representation of a localized issue, but rather a dynamic and influential contingent of women in pursuit a greater cause on the Korean Peninsula.

Established in the aftermath of the 2016 presidential election, Indivisible is an organization specifically set up to resist the policies and agenda of the Trump administration. Former congressional staffers kick started the movement by penning an online handbook with suggestions for effectively resisting the trump Administration. This handbook became a catalyst for a movement that has gone on to resist Trump in a multitude of different manners.

The handbook outlines a four-point strategy. Namely, to establish a grassroots strategy in order to target members of Congress, to exert pressure on local members of Congress, to organize local groups and mobilize constituents, and to adhere to advocacy tactics which optimize pressure on the government and Congress.

By employing many of the same tactics as the Tea Party, Indivisible have matched techniques used on the other side of the political aisle to push back against a strong conservative agenda.

In addition to a keen focus on targeted electoral victories, Indivisible have also mounted campaigns to expand health care, protect net neutrality and curb Trump’s Supreme Court picks.

Indivisible are heavily represented in protest throughout the country, from the Women’s March to localized state corruption protests. They also provide accessible information about the Trump administration and upcoming events where individuals can demonstrate their opposition to Trump’s agenda.
